01 — The founding spirit

Passion, and a chemist’s notebook.

Geranium Gin is the result of an unprecedented combination of passion and science from Hammer & Son, aiming to create the ultimate Premium London Dry Gin.

H. Hammer Sr. used his skills as a chemist, while H. Hammer Jr. drew on his affection for gin and experience as a judge at gin tastings. From the beginning they knew that a particular type of geranium could add the quality they were seeking.

A perfect mix of geranium from the organic grounds and nine other botanicals is matured for 48 hours in the finest grain spirit before distilling. The purest water from the artesian well is added before bottling, with energy from sun and wind.

Questions about Geranium Gin.

What is Geranium Gin?

Geranium is a Premium London Dry Gin made by Hammer & Son, a Danish spirits house. It comes in two strengths: 44% ABV London Dry and 55% ABV Navy Strength.

Who makes Geranium Gin, and where?

Hammer & Son ApS (CVR 39190176) makes it at Vintre Møller in Kirke Såby, Denmark, in the copper pot stills Mia and Nini. The gin was created by H. Hammer Sr., a chemist, and H. Hammer Jr., a gin judge, and first released in 2009. At first the base spirit was distilled at Langley in England; since 2024 the whole gin has been made at Vintre Møller.

Is Geranium Gin organic?

Yes. The geraniums, and most of the other botanicals, are grown on the organic grounds at Vintre Møller.

What botanicals are in Geranium Gin?

Ten: geranium (Pelargonium), juniper, coriander, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica, cassia, orris, liquorice, and a tenth that the house keeps unnamed. They macerate in grain spirit for 48 hours before distilling.

What does Geranium Gin taste like?

Juniper first, with a crisp citrus-rose note from the geranium. The oils in the leaf (geraniol, rose oxide and citronellol) are also found in fruits and spices, so the gin changes with the mixer.

What is the difference between Geranium 44° and 55°?

44° is the everyday London Dry. 55° is Navy Strength: more weight for a Dry Martini, a G&T or a Negroni, with the same balance. 55° is also the latitude of the distillery.

What water is used?

Water from the artesian well at Vintre Møller is added before bottling.

What awards has Geranium Gin won?

Geranium has been awarded in 17 international spirits tastings, including the World Spirits Awards in 2009, its first year, and IWSC Gold in 2010. It was the gin in the winning drink at the IBA World Cocktail Championship in Japan in 2016.
